The Georgia Shakespeare celebrates the work of English dramatists William Shakespeare whose sublime masterpieces have entertained people down the ages.
The festival was co- founded in 1985 by Kirby McLain (Lane) Anderson, Richard Garner and Robert Watson. Georgia Shakespeare (then called Georgia Shakespeare Festival) opened its first session on July 10, 1986, and closed on August 10, 1986 staging Shakespeare's rib tickling comedy 'The Taming of the Shrew' and the maginificient tragedy 'King Lear'. Over 6,000 people attended the twenty- five performances that season, held in a 60' X 90' white tent located on the Oglethorpe University front athletic field.
It is a vast theater company incorporating the country's finest actors who perform the world famous stories through their talent.
Besides the great Shakespeare, works of classic playwrights as Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Anton Chekhov, Miguel Cervantes, Moliere and others are also staged here. The theater aims at portraying the human spirit in all its agony and ecstasy. The festival promises full time entertainment to its visitors and also serves as a source of education to students. It provides a harmonious blend of art and education.
