George Gress decided to provide a safe haven to animals and thereafter conserve their habitat by opening the Zoo Atlanta in 1889. At present, this zoo is home to almost 1,000 animal representing 250 species from around the world. The zoo occupies the southern half of Grant Park.
The surrounding environment is spacious and naturalistic with plenty of trees, bushes, watering holes and cozy dens which makes the animal feel safe and at home. The animals are kept in different zones according to their habitat. The Kenyan habitat has quaint giraffes, striking zebras, ostriches, antelope, rhinos, majestic lions and tigers. On a smaller scale, exotic birds, freaky reptiles, crawling insects and fascinating snakes also make their home in the zoo. As the only city- owned zoo in the U.S. that currently receives no government funding, Zoo Atlanta depends on philanthropic dollars to bridge the gap between earned revenue and the true cost of running the zoo.
