The High Museum of Art came into being in 1905, bearing the name of Atlanta Art Association. It holds pride of place as the leading art museum in Southeastern United States. It is also the most prominent museum in North America to have a curatorial department specifically devoted to the field of folk and self- taught art. Located in Atlanta's Midtown arts and business district, the High has over 11,000 works of art in its permanent collection. The Museum has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th- century American art; significantly holdings of European paintings, decorative art and a growing collection of African American art.
The building designed by well known architect Richard Merer, has received many design awards, including a 1991 citation from the American Institute of Architects as one of the “ten best works of American architecture of the 1980s.”
