Fernbank Museum of Natural History is one of the world's famous museums to have exclusively evolved from a forest- growth. It was a dream transformed into reality by Emily Harrison.

Growing up in the late 1800s, Emily Harrison often played in the forest surrounding her home just east of Atlanta. In 1938, Emily Harrison and friend, Dr. Woolford Baker, led a group to charter Fernbank, Inc., in order to purchase and preserve the 70 acres of old growth woodland and the adjacent properties in which she had played as a child.

The term “Fernbank” was coined by Emily herself, due to the presence of a large number of ferns in that area. Architects Graham Gund designed the striking, 160,000 square foot museum.

In 2001 Fernbank became the first museum in the world to display the world largest dinosaur, Arganitinosaurus. This gargunatuan sauropod is now a permanent feature in the museum's 86- foot tall atrium along with one of the world's largest.

Opening hours:

Monday- Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday: noon to 5 p.m.
